board games
Students had the opportunity to make their own games. Here are a few sampels.
Billy Goats Gruff and other creative moments
Some students considered other ways to cross a river...In other classes students were allowed some creative time while classmates finished making board games.
Egg Cars
4th and 5th grade students designed protective enclosures to keep an egg safe while traveling down a ramp and coming to sudden stop. Here are a few designs.
Marshmallow buildings
K-1 made structures out of toothpicks and marshmallows. We began by discussing 2-D shapes, like squares and triangles, and then introduced 3-D shapes. We combined those shapes to build our larger structures.
Knex playgrounds
Some classes used Knex to build playgrounds as a way to introduce the idea of simple machines. Students tried to incorporate inclined planes, levers, and wheels and axles. Of course, there were some other designs thrown in for fun.
Team Building - Tallest tower
For two class sessions our teams worked on building the tallest towers possible. Students were given one class session to get to know their partners, select jobs, and practice using the building materials. Students were encouraged to record ideas that appeared to be successful and improve on those ideas for during the final build. During the second sessions, students were given 15-20 minutes to build the tallest tower possible. Classes that stayed on schedule were then allowed 5 minutes to build the most interesting tower possible. Below are some of the clear(ish) pictures we were able to snap before the towers were destroyed. Thank you to all the students that participated. Great work!
